On Tuesday 1 August we rolled our sleeves up, tied up our pinnies and got ready for a morning of volunteering at Trinity Winchester.
Cooking was the order of the day and upon arrival, we helped with the huge delivery that had just arrived from Sainsbury’s; there were fruit and vegetables galore as well as a large number of tins and jars. The chef had defrosted chicken prior to our arrival so that had to form part of our meat dish, but the rest was left completely to us to think up a culinary menu!
The challenge was to cook a meat dish, vegetarian dish and a dessert for around 30 homeless or vulnerable people who would be arriving for their hot meal between 12-1pm.
We decided on a chicken and a vegetable curry with rice, followed by apple and plum crumble with custard.
Breakfast and a cooked lunch is just a small part of the work that Trinity do; they ensure that vulnerable and socially excluded adults who may be rough sleepers, ‘sofa surfers’ or in temporary accommodation such as hostels, have access to practical and emotional support, in a bid to help these people improve their lives.
At the centre, based on Durngate Street in Winchester, there is also a heavy focus on their dedicated women’s service where around 150 women a year are supported to make positive change to their lives and steps to break free from the damaging cycle of abuse. As well as this, there’s a wide range of advice and information on benefits, housing, alcohol/drug use and harm minimisation as well as skills development and job club to help those who are ready to get back into paid employment.
Service users also get their basic needs met at the centre with the use of a hot shower, a laundry room to wash their items and new clothing where required.
We were privileged to have been able to help out for such a worthy cause and thoroughly enjoyed our time at the centre. We are looking forward to supporting Trinity in the future.
