September 2017 saw us take on a work experience student from Thornden, a secondary school just down the road from our office in Chandlers Ford. We were delighted to welcome Olivia who joined us for a week, learning about the ins and outs of how a full service design and marketing agency works.
Why do we take on work experience students?
The design and marketing industry is a desirable one with what often seems like more candidates than there are placements.
For us, work experience is not just the chance to get someone to make cups and tea for us all day, or get some free labour for a week or two, it’s not about just giving someone a laptop and telling them to do some data entry – it’s about helping to shape a young persons future career.
We believe that to offer the chance to spend a week, or two, at our studio really helps to give young people the feel for whether this is an industry they would like to work in (or perhaps realise this isn’t a sector they want to work in and give them the time to find a different passion), whilst broadening their ideas of what they might think we do. It enables young people to learn what is expected in the workplace; a work day routine, working and meeting with a broad range of people from assistants to directors, to have the opportunity to join us at client meetings and witness a pitch process.
We’ve all been at school leaving age (a lot longer than we care to admit!) and unsure what to do next and we’ve each found a role that we love and enjoy coming in to work each day – to help a school leaver determine their path, to us, is a great feeling.
We look forward to next September where we have Lydia joining us for two weeks.
